Atlanta Surgeon J. S. Franklin Sr. M.D., FACS

Background

Dr. Franklin joined North Atlanta Surgical Associates in January of 2011. He was previously in practice in Gadsden, Alabama for over 5 years. He is now affiliated with Piedmont Fayette Hospital.

He is board certified in general surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. His surgical residency was completed at Atlanta Medical Center (formerly GA Baptist) in 2005. Dr. Franklin completed medical school at the Medical College of Georgia and was an honors graduate of Augusta College. He was born and grew up in Thomaston, GA.

Dr. Franklin has vast experience in laparoscopy. He also regularly does traditional open, and advanced robotics surgery.

While in Alabama was the first surgeon in the state to complete a laparoscopic gallbladder removal with the da Vinci robot. His robotics “firsts” continued after his move back to Georgia – the first in the Piedmont Health System to complete gallbladder removal with the da Vinci robot, and separately the first robotic “single-incision” gallbladder removal (one incision less than an inch in the umbilicus), along with the first robotic-assisted colon resection in Fayetteville. He is one of a very few surgeons in the state utilizing this technique with the robot.

Dr. Franklin has published and given numerous presentations on the topics of: advanced laparoscopic procedures, cellular behavior of oral cancers, trauma, multiple sclerosis, and intravascular ultrasound. His volunteer experience includes that of the Salvation Army homeless shelter and a local medical clinic – Healing Bridge.

Dr. Franklin has served on hospital committees in Alabama that include the medical executive board, Chairman of the Department of Surgery, and Chairman of the physician leadership group. He is presently a member of the utilization review committee, Chairman of the department of general surgery, and robotics committee chairman at Piedmont Fayette.

He currently resides in Peachtree City with his wife and three children. When not at home you can find him traveling with his family.
